Description
In delicate shades of gray and sepia, a mountain landscape unfolds, its gnarled pine branches pressing against rugged rock formations. The ink painting on silk relies on fine washes that suggest both mist and distance, while in the foreground a small grazing animal enlivens the scene.
The composition follows the classical Chinese-Japanese tradition of landscape painting, in which empty spaces convey as much as the painted elements – an art of suggestion that invites contemplation. The mounting features axis ends made of bone, a detail that underscores the care taken in the original craftsmanship.
Created in the Shôwa period, this hanging scroll continues the centuries-old tradition of mountain landscape painting and makes an excellent, quiet, meditative focal point in a living room or study.
