Description
Delicately blurred ink tones bring rugged rock formations and gnarled pines emerging from dense fog, while gently suggested mountain ranges in the background hint at the depth of the landscape. The composition thrives on the deliberate interplay of densely painted, dark passages and generously left-open, light areas that create the impression of clouds and rising mist. It is a typical landscape painting in the style of the Chinese-influenced Suiboku tradition, as it was long held in high esteem in Japan.
The hanging scroll, painted on silk, bears the signature and seal of the artist Kawabata Gyoku and was created in the Shôwa period. The Jikusaki made of bone underscores the high-quality workmanship, and the hanging scroll is delivered including a signed wooden box, which further contributes to the provenance and the state of preservation of the work.
Landscape depictions of this kind invite quiet contemplation and represent the close connection between man and nature in the Japanese art tradition. Collectors of classical ink painting and lovers of calm, atmospheric compositions will find in this piece a particularly evocative work.
