Description
Between rugged rocks and gnarled pines, this kakemono opens onto a view of a vast mountain landscape, above which a small red sun is rising. Birds fly in a row across the sky, while at the foot of the rocks a flowering branch provides a delicate touch of color.
The composition is typical of Japanese landscape painting of the Shôwa period: mist and empty spaces let the mountains recede further into the distance, while a calligraphy at the upper edge of the image adds a poetic dimension to the work. The scene is painted on silk, a material that lends particular luminosity to the soft gradations of ink and color.
The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods is made of wood and complements the calm overall effect of the image. This hanging scroll is an atmospheric choice for lovers of classical Japanese landscape painting who value atmosphere and fine painterly detail.
