Mountain Landscape with Torii Gate

A shimmering blue peak rises above a vast landscape crossed by bands of mist, while a narrow path winds between pines and cedars up to a small red torii gate. At the foot of the mountain lie terraced rice fields and a thatched-roof farmhouse, so that the image of an entire, harmoniously coherent cultural landscape unfolds before the viewer.

The torii marks the transition to a sacred precinct and points to the close connection between landscape and Shintō belief in Japan, where mountains are often themselves venerated as the dwelling place of deities. The clear coloring, kept in muted tones of green and blue, underscores this almost reverent mood of the scenery.

The kakemono was hand-painted on paper during the Heisei period and mounted with wooden jikusaki. The signature at the lower edge of the image identifies it as the autograph work of a Japanese painter.
