Description
A mighty peak, modeled in fine shades of gray, rises above a narrow waterfall that plunges into the depths between dark pines. At the foot of the mountain, a small village with thatch-roofed houses nestles in the snow, accompanied by a slender pagoda at the right edge of the image.
This combination of majestic peak, cascading water, and human dwelling is a recurring motif in Japanese landscape painting, contrasting the grandeur of nature with the modesty of human habitation. The accompanying calligraphy with red artist's seal lends the work additional literary depth.
The hanging scroll was created in the Shôwa period on fine paper and is mounted in an elaborately patterned silk brocade mounting. The clear vertical pictorial axis and the calm tonal harmony of black, gray, and muted white make this kakemono a striking highlight for collectors of traditional mountain depictions, known as Mountain Peak with Waterfall and Village.
