Description

In fine, loosely applied ink lines, a rugged mountain range rises on this kakemono, at the foot of which a small village with simple houses nestles into the fog. The deliberately left blank, pale paper ground makes the mountains appear to emerge from the haze and lends the composition a floating, almost unreal lightness.

Such self-contained mountain landscapes stand in the tradition of Chinese-inspired landscape painting and invite the viewer on a quiet, meditative journey through the depicted scenery. A small red seal next to the signature confirms the authorship of the work.

Painted on paper, this hand-painted unique work dates from the Taishô period and thus ranks among the older pieces of its kind. For collectors of historical Japanese landscape painting, this calm, atmospheric kakemono, "Mountain Village in Morning Fog," is a particularly evocative addition.
