Description

A small snail at the top of a bamboo stake, up which a morning glory (asagao) with blue trumpet-shaped flowers climbs – a motif that captures the quiet powers of observation of Japanese nature painting. The heart-shaped, lobed leaves are laid out in strong, wet ink tones, with clearly visible leaf veins fanning out across the entire surface. The snail itself is suggested with a few fine lines and sits alone on the bamboo stake, well above the foliage; behind it, a crescent moon is delicately suggested.

This restraint in the composition is typical of the sumi-e tradition, in which even small, inconspicuous creatures are worthy of their own contemplation.

In Japan, the morning glory, whose flowers open for a single morning only, is regarded as a symbol of fleeting beauty, lending the image a quiet philosophical depth.
