Description
Two small birds with orange breasts sit closely together on a gnarled, blossoming plum branch, while delicate pink blossoms run through the entire upper part of the image. The plum blossom is regarded in Japan as one of the first signs of spring and symbolizes perseverance and renewal, as it blooms even before the leaves emerge.
At the upper left, a calligraphic inscription with a red seal completes the composition, lending it a literary depth as cherished in classical Chinese-Japanese bird-and-flower painting. The vivid red and green tones of the birds set a lively accent against the warm gold tone of the background.
Rendered on silk and with roller ends made of plastic, the work dates from the Shôwa period and captivates with its clear, joyful pictorial language. An evocative motif that captures the feeling of spring and the beauty of fleeting moments in nature.
