Description

Bold tones of red, blue, and green in the plumage of a proud rooster set a vivid accent of color against the dark foliage of a bamboo grove painted in ink technique. The watchful gaze, the upright comb, and the finely rendered feathers attest to great painterly care, while the painting takes up the familiar motif of the rooster-and-hen pair – a symbol popular in Japan for family happiness, vigilance, and a good start to the new day.

The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of the painter Yukida Furusawa and was executed by hand on silk in the Shôwa period. It is delivered including the signed wooden box that served to protect and properly store the artwork.

With its bold coloring, this kakemono sets a vivid accent in the tokonoma or elsewhere in the room, and is equally suited as a motif bringing good fortune for special occasions. For collectors of colorful Japanese bird painting, this unique work is an appealing addition.
