Description

Beneath a blossoming cherry tree stands a samurai in full armor, gazing upward, while delicate characters in the background accompany the composition. The armor plates are executed in bold red and fine ornamentation, testifying to great painterly precision.

This hanging scroll was created in the Meiji period in traditional hand painting on silk. The jikusaki made of bone completes the classical mounting of the hanging scroll and underscores the value of the piece.

The connection between warriorhood and cherry blossom is one of the most striking pictorial motifs of Japan, symbolizing as it does the transience of life as well as the courage and honor of the samurai. This atmospheric scene is excellently suited for lovers of Japanese history and art who wish to preserve a piece of this fascinating symbolism within their own four walls.
