Description

A snow-covered farmhouse nestled into a gently rolling hill landscape stands in this kakemono as a symbol of the quiet seclusion of the Japanese winter. Smoke rises from the chimney, a bare tree covered in snow rises next to the house, and individual footprints lead up a slope - silent witnesses to human life amid the snow-covered nature.

Winter landscapes belong to the long tradition of sansui-ga, Japanese landscape painting, in which the seasons are read as an expression of constant change and impermanence. The reduced, almost monochrome color palette and the soft contours create a meditative, introspective mood.

The painting bears the signature or seal of Takaya. Painted on silk, this hanging scroll dates from the Meiji period. A poetic testimony to classical Japanese landscape painting for collectors who appreciate quiet, atmospheric winter scenes.
