Description
A quiet, almost wintry stillness pervades this Kakemono, on which a single bird sits on a gnarled, partly moss-covered plum branch whose blossoms are just beginning to open. Delicate green on the buds and the restrained palette of sepia and cream tones create a contemplative, almost meditative mood that invites the viewer to linger.
The tree is rendered with confident, calligraphic brushwork, while the bird appears lifelike through fine detail in its plumage and gaze. This juxtaposition of rough bark and delicate plumage is a favored stylistic device of classical Kachô-ga painting and lends the composition depth and tension.
The work bears the signature or seal of Iranan Ryo and is delivered including a specially signed wooden box. Painted on silk and mounted on a shaft of bone, this hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period. A quiet, poetic unique work for lovers of traditional Japanese painting.
