Description
The sun rises in vivid red over the sea, while two cranes pass across the sky in calm flight and gentle waves line the lower edge of the picture. The combination of the rising sun and cranes is one of Japan's most beloved lucky symbols, as both motifs stand for long life, renewal, and a good omen.
The clear coloring, with the rich red of the sun set against a soft pastel sky and the deep blue of the waves, gives the composition a festive, almost ceremonial effect. A signature with a red artist's seal at the lower edge of the picture confirms the authorship of the work, which is painted on silk and can be attributed to the Shôwa period.
Fitted with roller ends made of bone, this hanging scroll is delivered including a wooden box. Thanks to its luminous colors and positive symbolism, the kakemono is particularly well suited as a motif for congratulations or New Year in a representative living space.
