Description
The pine and the plum tree are counted among the so-called three friends of winter and, in the East Asian pictorial tradition, stand for steadfastness, renewal, and long life. In this expansive river landscape with willows, small houses, and a boat, this venerable motif unfolds against an atmospheric natural backdrop.
The subtle gradations of color between rich green and warm ocher lend the scenery spatial depth, while individual figures on the shore give the picture a narrative character. The work was created in the Meiji period (1868–1912) on paper and shows the carefully executed landscape painting typical of this era.
The wooden jikusaki complements the classical mounting of this hanging scroll. An evocative kakemono with a long symbolic tradition for collectors of antique Japanese painting.
