Description

The dragon is one of the most powerful symbolic figures in East Asian mythology, representing strength, wisdom, and control over water and weather. In this hanging scroll, the mythical creature, with its flowing mane and powerful claws, winds through dense cloud formations painted in fine ink tones, so that its body becomes visible only in places, creating the impression of boundless movement.

This technique of concealing and suggesting is typical of classical dragon painting and reinforces the aura of mystery that has always been attributed to the fabled creature. The shimmering background in gold and violet tones of the mounting further underscores the grandeur of the motif.

The painting bears the signature and seal of Kano Akinobu and is delivered including a wooden box. The hand painting on silk rests on a roller shaft made of bone and was created in the Shôwa period. The dynamic brushwork lends the creature an impressive vitality despite the reduced color palette. An imposing hanging scroll for collectors who appreciate powerful, mythologically charged motifs of Japanese hanging scroll art.
