Description
Two mandarin ducks rest beneath blossoming willow branches, their delicate buds announcing the approaching spring – a motif that traditionally stands for marital happiness and fidelity in Japan, as mandarin ducks are considered pairs bonded for life. The fine, naturalistic execution with warm brown and pink tones in the plumage attests to great painterly skill.
Painted on silk, this hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Keifumi Matsumura from the Shôwa period. In particular, the delicate branches with their numerous buds and the calm, balanced composition lend the work a quiet, meditative effect.
As a symbol of good fortune for couples, this motif was a popular gift for weddings and anniversaries. The roller ends of the hanging scroll are fitted with plastic fixtures. A work distinguished by its fine attention to detail and warm color palette, and an enrichment to any collection of traditional Japanese bird painting (Kachō-ga).
