Description

Two little puppies frolic playfully in the snow, their paws stirring up the white ground as they nip at each other in play. The painter has captured the soft fur textures of the animals with the finest brushstrokes, making the liveliness of the scene almost tangible. In the background, a few delicate bamboo stalks hint at the season and lend the composition additional depth.

The kakemono was hand-painted on fine silk in the Shôwa period, a technique that requires much practice and a sure sense of proportion and expression. The jikusaki, the elaborately crafted roller end, is made of bone and elegantly rounds off the traditional presentation of the hanging scroll.

Motifs of playing puppies have long been regarded in Japan as a symbol of lightheartedness, affection, and domestic happiness. As a unique work, this hand-painted kakemono brings a warm, friendly mood into any room and is equally suited as a special gift or as a stylish eye-catcher for lovers of Japanese painting.
