Description
Delicately curved branches with reddish plum blossoms extend across the cream-white body of this vase before the ground transitions into a deep, glossy black – a contrast that lends the vessel a calm yet festive effect. Fine gold lines accentuate the flower calyxes and make the composition shimmer even in raking light.
The vase originates from the Kutani tradition, one of the oldest and most esteemed porcelain painting traditions of Japan, known for its bold colors and the artful combination of underglaze painting and gold overlay. Motifs of the ume blossom, which as the first flower of the year endures the winter, are also regarded in Japanese visual language as a symbol of perseverance and renewal.
On the base of the vessel is the signature of the potter Akimori Nakata (中田明守), who expresses his connection to Kutani painting with this vase. The unique work is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master, which offers the work a dignified setting across generations and documents its provenance.
