Description
The gentle, warm glow of traditional Raku ware from Kyoto shines in this chawan by Ichiraku Nishimura with a subtle, almost poetic intensity. Nishimura Ichiraku (born 1951), an established Kyo-yaki and Raku artist from the Hoen-Gama in Ayabe, Kyoto, began his training in 1973 under Deguchi Naoe and Ono Kyugyo. Independent since 1980 and given the name "Ichiraku" by Deguchi, he is a full member of the Kyoto Ceramic Art Association. His works, often highly esteemed in the Urasenke school of the tea ceremony, are characterized by hand-formed, low-fired pieces that combine the classical Raku technique with fine glaze variations, creating a balance of simplicity and subtle depth.
The vessel shows a cylindrical, slightly conical shape with an irregularly undulating, organic rim that creates a natural asymmetry and a soft tactile quality. The glaze shifts from a light, creamy orange at the top to deeper, terracotta-colored tones below, traversed by gray and bluish shadows as well as fine craquelé cracks that run like delicate veins across the matte, porous surface. These vivid transitions and the glossy reflections on the raised areas create a gentle contrast that reveals new nuances of warmth and coolness depending on light and viewing angle, making the piece feel almost as if it breathes.
As a handcrafted unique work by a respected master of the Raku tradition, this chawan is delivered in a signed wooden box, underscoring its authenticity and its particular value for collectors. It is excellently suited for preparing matcha, where the slight porosity, the pleasant warmth of the clay, and the visual harmony deepen the ritual and foster a profound sense of calm. Over time, the object gains even more character through patina and gentle use, becoming a quiet, timeless companion that makes tangible the essence of Japanese ceramic art - impermanence, naturalness, and inner stillness.
