Description
A soft rushing sound seems to stream directly out of this kakemono: two narrow, light-colored bands plunge into the depths between hazy mountain contours, while at the foot of the waterfall a small scholar figure remains lost in contemplation.
The ink painting on silk is characterized by soft, blending tones of gray that convey the moist atmosphere of the mountain gorge; a gnarled branch and scattered autumn leaves add quiet accents. The painting bears the signature and seal of Tani Buncho, whose style is clearly recognizable here.
The hanging scroll is delivered together with a matching wooden box, as was customary for high-quality kakemono, in order to protect the painting and silk mounting over generations. An evocative work for lovers of classical Chinese-Japanese landscape painting.
