Description

Dating from the Meiji period, this kakemono depicts a lush arrangement of white and red chrysanthemums, accompanied by slender grasses that trace curved lines through the composition. The large, multi-petaled chrysanthemum blossoms are worked out in detail with fine brushstrokes, while the smaller, brightly red blossoms in the lower part of the image provide vivid touches of color.

The chrysanthemum is regarded in Japan as an imperial symbol and at the same time stands for longevity, nobility, and the culmination of autumn - it is one of the most significant floral motifs of traditional painting and is often depicted with sublime restraint.

Painted on paper and mounted on a roller made of bone, this hanging scroll captivates with its clear, decorative pictorial language. A splendid collector's item for lovers of the floral motifs of Japanese ink painting, well suited as an eye-catcher in a representative room.
