Description

A slender crescent moon stands above an autumnal forest, its trees and shrubs painted in warm tones of red and brown. The soft, almost hazy background lets the trees blur into one another, creating the stillness of a clear autumn night in which light and darkness gently meet.

The composition concentrates on the lower half of the picture, while the large, empty sky with the crescent moon gives the work plenty of room to breathe – a characteristic stylistic device of Japanese landscape painting. The scene is painted on silk, whose fine texture lends the autumnal tones additional warmth.

The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods is made of bone, and the kakemono from the Shôwa period is delivered including its own signed wooden box. For lovers of atmospheric Japanese landscape painting, this hanging scroll, "Autumn Night in the Forest," is a particularly poetic choice.
