Description
On a gnarled, wide-spreading branch covered all over with delicate white blossoms sits a yellow-feathered bird, gazing attentively to the side. The blossoming branches trace elegant curves across the entire height of the image, lending the composition a calm, almost dance-like dynamic.
The white blossoms with their fine red stamens are typical of the plum tree, which flowers early in the year and whose sight has long been celebrated in Japan as the first sign of approaching spring. The painting bears the signature of Yasuyama Tachiwaki, whose calm, precise brushwork is evident in the finely rendered branches and blossoms.
This kakemono comes in a signed wooden box and is painted on silk, mounted with roller rods made of bone and in plain, light-colored fabric. An evocative unique work from the Shôwa period that captures the anticipation of spring in a quiet, poetic visual language.
