Description
With a loose, almost impressionistic brushstroke, this kakemono captures a small bird alighting on a blossoming plum branch, its wings spread and its head tilted slightly. The technique of hand painting is especially evident in the glazed, transparent rendering of the cream-colored plumage, which stands out gently against the light background, while the pink blossom buds are suggested with fine dabs of color.
The combination of bird and plum blossom is one of the classic spring motifs of Japanese painting and symbolizes awakening, renewal, and the joy of the first warm days after winter. A small red seal next to the signature harmoniously completes the composition.
The work bears the signature or stamp of Ikko Furuya and is delivered including a wooden box. Painted on paper and mounted on a wooden axis rod, this hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period. A delicate collector's piece that captures the lightness of Japanese spring in a single pictorial moment.
