Description
With just a few sweeping brushstrokes, this kakemono captures the character 夢 – "dream" – executed in the flowing sōsho style, in which individual strokes can barely be distinguished from one another and the movement of the hand itself becomes the content of the image. Despite its power, the calligraphy appears light and floating, almost as though the character itself were still in motion, which further underscores the meaning of the word.
The work bears the signature and seal of the calligrapher Fujii Dou and dates from the Shōwa period. The support material is paper, and the scroll mounting is fitted with jikusaki ends made of wood, a classic and restrained execution that directs the focus entirely to the characters.
The work is delivered including a signed wooden box (tomobako). As a kakemono in the tokonoma or as a powerful calligraphic accent in a minimalistically furnished room, the character for "dream" unfolds its quiet, contemplative effect.
