Description
Framed in calm blue-gray, this kakemono appears especially restrained and elegant despite its expressive brushwork – a mood that matches the contemplative character of the Chinese poem captured here in calligraphic form, unfolding across the entire height of the image.
The text extols the evergreen bamboo, which endures for centuries, while a delicate blossom unfolds its beauty for only a brief moment – a poetic symbol for the contrasts of permanence and transience. A small, finely written additional line beside the main inscription suggests that this sheet was composed for a special occasion. Two red seals reinforce the calligrapher's signature and give the sheet its personal character.
Executed on paper and mounted with a wooden jikusaki, this hanging scroll was created in the Shôwa period. The muted coloring of the mounting allows the powerful black characters to stand out with particular clarity – a stylish, restrained piece for connoisseurs of East Asian calligraphy.
