Description

A cheerful, almost buoyant mood pervades this hanging scroll, whose characters, written in clearly legible kana script, convey a simple yet timeless wisdom about life: with flowers, life is beautiful; with friends, it becomes joyful. Few words, yet they reveal much about an open, sociable attitude toward life and bring a smile when read.

The calligrapher forgoes complex Chinese characters in favor of the flowing Japanese syllabary, which makes the text immediately accessible even to those unfamiliar with calligraphy. The soft, dancing lines underscore the friendly, welcoming character of the message, while red seals at the top and bottom frame the composition harmoniously.

Executed on paper and fitted with a jikusaki made of ceramics, this hanging scroll was created during the Shôwa period. The gold-grounded mounting fabric with its delicate diamond pattern lends the sheet a festive note. An endearing piece for anyone who takes pleasure in a friendly, positive message about life and wishes to add something warm-hearted to their home.
