Description
In powerful, flowing characters, this kakemono captures the term "Great Compassion" – it could more precisely be translated as "the spirit of great compassion." The expression originates from Zen Buddhism, which suggests that the calligraphy was created by a Japanese Zen priest whose name can no longer be determined with certainty today, but whose spiritual bearing is clearly reflected in the brushwork.
The brushstroke appears determined and at the same time meditatively calm, with dynamic thickenings and fine trailing strokes that reveal the inner discipline of the writer. Two red seals set colorful accents next to the signature and underscore the spiritual significance of the short but weighty text, which sums up an entire Buddhist attitude to life in just a few characters.
Written on paper and mounted in a fine purple silk brocade with a floral pattern in gold and dark blue, this hanging scroll is in excellent condition. For lovers of Zen calligraphy, it is a stylish object that combines Buddhist wisdom with masterful calligraphic artistry.
