Description
Two large-format characters dominate this kakemono, immediately drawing the eye with their powerful, dynamic brushwork. The thick, confidently placed strokes and the flowing connections between the individual lines attest to a sure, energetic hand that lends the sheet an impressive presence.
In terms of content, the characters combine to mean "happiness and a long life" – a wish that ranks among the most popular themes for gifts and festive occasions in the East Asian calligraphy tradition. The large characters are accompanied by smaller columns with date and dedication as well as several red seal impressions, which lend the work a personal, certificate-like character.
The calligraphy was written by hand on paper in the Shôwa period. The hanging scroll has jikusaki made of plastic and, thanks to its positive symbolism, makes a meaningful gift as well as a decorative element for one's own home.
