Description
"Fukuju" – happiness and long life: these two characters are among the most popular auspicious wishes in Japanese calligraphy and are traditionally given as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, or the New Year. With sweeping, broad brushstrokes, the writer gives powerful expression to this wish, with individual strokes running out to the edge of the composition.
The characters are executed in dark ink on paper, accompanied by a small signature and a red seal to the left of the composition. The confident, flowing brushwork points to an accomplished calligrapher of the Shōwa period, who deliberately distributed the two characters generously across the picture surface.
Mounted on a floral-patterned border with wooden rollers, this hanging scroll is excellently suited as a tasteful gift or as a decorative element for festive occasions – a timeless wish in classical form, equally at home in the living room as in the entryway.
