Description
Two powerfully written characters meaning "long life" dominate this hanging scroll, testifying to the centuries-old tradition of Sho calligraphy, in which every brushstroke is an expression of inner concentration and skill. The dynamic, slightly cursive style of writing gives the characters a flowing, almost dance-like movement.
The calligraphy is framed by an elegant border with a gold-colored diamond pattern, lending the work a festive, dignified setting. A red artist's seal next to the signature confirms the authorship of this work executed on paper from the Shôwa period.
Fitted with plastic roller ends, this hanging scroll is wonderfully suited as a gift for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or other festive occasions centered on the wish for a long, healthy life. A timeless classic of the art of Japanese calligraphy.
