Description
Seven characters run in a single column across the entire height of this kakemono, lending it an almost architectural clarity. The statement means roughly "Open your mind's eye, the universe is boundless" and reflects a thought commonly found in Buddhist-inflected maxims: the call to think beyond the visible world.
The brushwork is even and calm, the characters standing in a clear arrangement side by side, which lends the contemplative statement additional emphasis. A small red seal in the upper right confirms the authorship of the calligraphy. The paper support dates from the Shôwa period and is surrounded by a dark, speckled border interspersed with gold, which lends the work a refined, almost nocturnal depth.
Anyone with an enthusiasm for far eastern philosophy and the power of the written word will find in this calligraphy kakemono, titled Calligraphy "Open Your Mind's Eye", a quiet, thought-provoking wall piece that unfolds beautifully in both living spaces and work areas.
