Description

On delicate, pale blue-tinted paper stand six characters in powerful, flowing script, whose meaning can be rendered as "The honorable guest enters together with the master." The unusual blue paper color lends the work a cool, elegant note and clearly sets it apart from classical calligraphies on cream-colored ground.

Such words of welcome were traditionally composed in Japan for special occasions, for instance to honor guests at a tea ceremony or a festive reception and to convey esteem to them. The lively, at times playful brushwork conveys a warm, inviting mood. Created on paper in the Shôwa period, the hanging scroll is bordered by a subdued brown mounting and mounted on a rod with roller ends made of plastic.

With its unusual paper color and inviting message, this calligraphy hanging scroll, Calligraphy "The Honorable Guest", is a particularly original choice for lovers of Japanese calligraphy and a fine welcome gift.
