Description

"Whoever chooses the path of virtue often chooses a difficult path" – this reflective motto is the content of the calligraphy on this kakemono and invites quiet reflection on moral steadfastness and the toils of an upright life.

In a wild, cursive manner, the characters flow into one another so that individual strokes are barely recognizable as separate characters – an expression of what is known as grass script (Sōsho), which demands the highest freedom and experience in handling the brush. Signature and red seal at the left edge of the image confirm authorship and give the composition its personal finishing touch.

Written on plain, cream-colored paper and mounted in an understated border, this hanging scroll makes its impression through its calligraphic virtuosity and its timeless moral content. A kakemono for all who are enthusiastic about the expressive side of Japanese calligraphy.
