Description
Four powerful, thickly applied characters fill almost the entire pictorial surface of this kakemono and immediately draw the eye – an expression of calligraphic self-assurance that makes the meaning of the text immediately palpable and leaves the viewer little room to look away.
The message, that one should do what is necessary and leave the rest to heaven, unites pragmatic wisdom of life with a quiet serenity toward what lies beyond human control – a thought deeply rooted in East Asian philosophy that has lost nothing of its relevance to this day. The strong, slightly angular brushstrokes further underscore the resoluteness of this statement.
Signed and bearing a red seal, the work is painted on paper, mounted with a wooden jikusaki, and dates from the Shôwa period. The brilliant gold-colored mounting fabric further enhances the effect of the dark ink. An expressive piece for anyone who values calligraphic wisdom of life as wall décor.
