Description

A single character, "Wa" – Harmony – fills the picture surface with a few confidently placed brushstrokes, giving immediate expression to one of the central values of Japanese culture: the striving for balance and harmony in all areas of life, from the family to society as a whole.

The ink is applied to paper in a powerful, slightly abstracted stroke, accompanied by a small signature and a red seal to its left. The reduced, concentrated composition points to an experienced calligrapher of the Shōwa period, who manages to convey an entire underlying attitude with a single character.

Mounted on an elegant, gold-patterned silk border with rollers made of plastic, this hanging scroll appears both simple and refined. A versatile kakemono that fits in as a calm eye-catcher in almost any living space, unfolding an understated, quiet presence there.
