Description

The gentle warmth and understated elegance of classic Hagi ware find their timeless expression in this chawan by Shogen. As the work of a master standing in the venerable lineage of Hagi pottery, the piece embodies the essence of wabi-sabi aesthetics: thrown on the potter's wheel from salmon-pink clay and half covered with a creamy-white straw-ash glaze (kakewake) that emphasizes natural irregularities. The surface shows subtle glaze runs and small, organic unevenness that arise through the controlled firing process, giving each piece a unique character.

The form of the vessel is deliberately simple and asymmetrical, with a wide, irregularly undulating rim that sits comfortably in the hand when held. The lower half presents itself in a warm salmon pink under a glossy glaze, interspersed with fine white glaze droplets and golden-orange accents – like random patches of sunlight on old bark. These natural transitions and the glossy, slightly granular texture invite one to experience the object not only visually but above all haptically: the fingers glide over the rough spots, feel the warmth of the clay, and discover new nuances with every use.

As a handcrafted unique work by a recognized Hagi potter, this chawan is presented in a signed wooden box, underscoring its significance for collectors and tea lovers alike. It is ideally suited for preparing matcha, where the reduced form and earthy presence deepen the ritual and convey a profound calm. Over time, the piece gains even more character through patina and traces of use, becoming a quiet companion in the everyday practice of Japanese aesthetics.
