Description
The warm, honey-like glow of classic Ohi-yaki unfolds in a particularly inviting way in this chawan by Choraku Ohi. Ohi ware, a side branch of the Raku tradition from Kanazawa, is distinguished by handformed, low-fired pieces created without a potter's wheel, often covered with the characteristic Ame-gusuri, the amber-colored glaze. Choraku Ohi (1902–1991), known as the eighth or ninth generational head of the renowned Ohi Chozaemon line, mastered this technique and created works that combine the lightness and softness of the clay with a subtle, almost velvety surface – an aesthetic deeply rooted in the tea ceremony yet possessing a timeless presence.
The vessel shows a gentle, undulating shape with an irregular rim that rests pleasantly against the lips when drinking. The intense orange-amber glaze covers the entire surface and allows fine, earthy textures to show through: tiny grains, slight cracks, and matte spots that resemble natural patina. This vivid, almost luminous color varies with the light, from deep amber to golden reflections, giving the chawan a warmth that one can almost feel before even holding it.
As a handcrafted unique work by a significant master of the Ohi tradition, this chawan is delivered in a signed wooden box, underscoring its authenticity and collector's value. It invites one to prepare matcha in it and enjoy the quiet ritual, in which the tactile quality of the light clay and the visual depth of the glaze enrich the experience. With each use, the piece takes on more character and becomes a quiet testament to Japanese craftsmanship, harmoniously uniting tradition and sensory presence.
