Description
The earthy warmth and raw naturalness of Shigaraki-yaki radiate from this chawan by Kazuki Omi with a quiet, almost meditative presence. Shigaraki ware, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan, is distinguished by its natural clay, which is often fired without glaze or with only minimal glaze, thereby emphasizing the texture of the local clay – full of quartz particles that sparkle in the surface. Kazuki Omi, a contemporary master of this tradition, creates works that combine the rustic power of the material with subtle refinement, typical of modern Shigaraki interpretations that harmoniously unite tea ceremony and daily life.
The vessel presents itself in a voluminous, slightly asymmetrical form with a wide, irregular rim that rests comfortably in the hand when held. The surface shows a rich layering of warm brown tones, interspersed with creamy-beige glaze runs – thick drips and fine speckles run across the rough, sandy texture, creating a contrast between matte areas and glossy reflections. Small, natural inclusions and tiny cracks in the clay lend the piece a lively patina, reminiscent of old earth or weathered bark, revealing new nuances depending on the light.
As a handcrafted unique work by a talented Shigaraki artist, this chawan is presented in a signed wooden box, underscoring its authenticity and its value for collectors. It is perfectly suited for preparing matcha or as a daily tea bowl, where the earthy tactile quality and visual depth deepen the drinking experience. Over time, the object gains even more character through use and touch, becoming a faithful companion that makes tangible the essence of Japanese ceramic art – simplicity, naturalness, and timeless beauty.
