Description

Reverently raising its head toward the rising sun, a single crane stands on a rock above foaming waves. The bold red disk above it is painted in delicate gradations from orange to pink and forms a strong contrast to the pure white of the plumage and the deep black tail feathers of the bird. Along the lower edge of the image, stylized, golden shimmering wave lines suggest the sea.

In Japan, the crane is regarded as a symbol of longevity, good fortune, and constancy; its association with the rising sun further reinforces the meaning of new beginnings and hope. The painting on silk was created in the Shôwa period and shows the care typical of this motif in rendering feather structure and posture. The picture support rests on a wooden rod, framed by an elegant brocade border interwoven with floral scrollwork.

This kakemono combines classical symbolism with a clear, calming visual language and is suitable both as a gift for special occasions and as a decorative element for lovers of traditional Japanese hanging scroll art.
