Description
Nestled between gently rising hills stands a thatched-roof farmhouse, embedded in dark conifer groves, while behind it blue-gray mountain peaks dissolve into dense morning mist. Along the river winding along the lower edge of the composition, a small boat with a figure can be made out, adding an element of human life to the scenery and opening a path into the depth of the image for the viewer.
The coloring is restrained and atmospheric: muted tones of green, blue, and earth merge with the misty passages, so that the boundary between solid form and diffuse haze remains deliberately blurred in places. This painting technique creates a palpable stillness and makes the landscape appear like a fleeting moment, just perceived. Signature and red seal are placed in the lower right.
Executed on paper and mounted in a warm, ochre-colored silk border with a delicate diamond pattern, this work dates from the Shôwa period. Such tranquil village and river landscapes are among the most popular motifs in Japanese landscape painting and convey a sense of rural tranquility that still resonates directly today.
