Description
Written line by line in a calm, disciplined hand, this hanging scroll shows the complete text of the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo), one of the most widely read sutras of Mahayana Buddhism. The even flow of the brushstrokes suggests a practiced, meditative writing practice.
The text is set down on fine washi paper, whose shimmering texture further emphasizes the character of the handwriting. The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods is made of wood, lending the overall appearance a plain, natural note. This hanging scroll is delivered in its own wooden box, which protects the delicate paper from light and moisture.
Those interested in Buddhist calligraphy or the contemplative side of Japanese writing art will find in this hanging scroll an object of great calm. It is suitable both as a spiritual focal point and as an addition to a collection of religious Japanese art.
