Description

A kingfisher with shimmering blue-green plumage sits elegantly on a branch above the water, its surface reflecting the bird's mirror image in muted colors. The fine, almost jewel-like coloring of the bird stands out charmingly against the calm surroundings held in cool tones.

The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Tani Bunchō and was executed in hand painting on silk during the Shōwa period. The jikusaki is made of bone; the hanging scroll is delivered in a specially matching wooden box.

Kingfisher in Moonlight is one of the most poetic motifs in Japanese bird painting, combining stillness, grace, and the special atmosphere of the night. This finely executed hanging scroll is excellently suited for collectors who are enthusiastic about elegant, richly colored depictions of nature in Japanese painting and who are looking for an atmospheric, contemplative wall image for their rooms.
