Description

Perched on a weathered wooden post above still water, this kingfisher sits with lowered head, as if about to watch for prey. Its shimmering green-blue plumage is rendered with fine brushstrokes, while the long, orange beak and delicate red legs provide strong accents of color. In the lower part of the image, blossoming branches and the water of the pond suggest a quiet, self-contained scene of nature.

The painting, executed on silk, bears the signature and seal of the artist Kinsen and was created in the Shôwa period. The jikusaki made of plastic completes the mounting of the hanging scroll. The kingfisher is one of the popular motifs of kacho-ga, the classical painting of birds and flowers, and is traditionally associated in Japan with vigilance and quiet elegance.

The fine powers of observation with which the bird's posture and plumage are rendered make this kakemono an appealing collector's item for lovers of Japanese nature painting. It is suited both as a decorative wall picture and as a starting point for the quiet contemplation of a fleeting moment in nature.
