Description
Two dark-feathered birds with a striking blue sheen sit on the gnarled branch of a densely blooming tree, its numerous white blossoms with reddish stamens covering the entire upper part of the image. The naturalistic depiction of plumage and blossom structure attests to great powers of observation and craftsmanship in the tradition of bird-and-flower painting.
The gnarled, moss-covered trunk with its characteristic branching and the delicate bamboo leaves in the lower part of the image create an appealing contrast between robust structure and delicate blossom splendor. A signature with a red seal at the lower edge of the image indicates the artist and the time of creation.
Painted on silk with roller ends made of plastic, this kakemono from the Shôwa period combines seasonal symbolism with a lively depiction of birds. A fresh, harmonious motif that captures the anticipation of spring and is excellently suited as a decorative element in bright living spaces.
