Description
With just a few broad brushstrokes, the characteristic silhouette of Mount Fuji is captured here – a motif that has served as a symbol of permanence, sublimity, and national identity in Japanese painting for centuries. The reduced, almost abstract depiction leaves ample room for the viewer's imagination.
The landscape motif is accompanied by a short line of poetry in cursive calligraphy, a combination of image and word popular in Japanese art that lends the work an additional poetic dimension. Such minimalist depictions of Fuji were often created by painters as an expression of spontaneous artistic inspiration.
The kakemono is painted on paper, mounted with wooden rods, and dates from the Meiji period. Despite – or perhaps because of – its simplicity, this hanging scroll unfolds a calm, meditative effect and is excellently suited as a stylish accent in a Japanese-inspired living space.
