Description

Rendered in delicate tones of pink and cream, a large sun rises above a gently undulating sea, its wave crests breaking into fine lines along the lower edge of the composition. The rising sun is one of Japan's central symbols of good fortune, representing new beginnings, strength, and a favorable omen – a motif traditionally displayed in Japanese homes at the turn of the year.

The reduced, almost minimalist visual language leaves ample room for the interplay of light and water, while the restrained color palette creates a warm, calming atmosphere. An artist's signature with a red seal in the lower section points to its origin in the Hida-Takayama region.

Painted on silk with roller ends made of bone, the work was created during the Shôwa period and impresses with its quiet, meditative effect. A hanging scroll whose clear symbolism and calm composition make it especially versatile.
