Description
A rugged rock formation, built up in dense layers of ink, extends across the entire height of the image, from whose crevices tufts of slender orchid leaves emerge and curve outward in fine, sweeping lines. At the foot of the rock a tiny boat can be made out, which vividly illustrates the enormous scale of the rock formation in comparison to the human figure.
To the left of the motif a lengthy poem is placed in fine, even calligraphy, adding a poetic dimension to the image, as was customary in literati painting, in which image and written word were regarded as equal forms of artistic expression. Two red seals accompany the inscription. In this tradition, the orchid is regarded as a symbol of quiet virtue and unadulterated character.
The work is executed on paper and mounted with a muted olive-green, finely textured silk border, created in the Shôwa period. This combination of powerful rock depiction, delicate orchids, and accompanying poetry makes this hanging scroll a sophisticated example of learned Chinese-Japanese ink art.
