Description
Several sparrows have settled among the first pink blossoms of a plum tree – one balances upside down on a branch, while two others search for food on the ground beneath the blossoms. The combination of a blossoming branch and birds is a classic motif of Japanese kachô-ga painting, capturing the transition into spring.
The coloring is delicate and naturalistic, ranging from the light pink of the blossoms to the warm brown of the sparrows' plumage, while the blue background lends the scene a calm, almost wintry coolness. The work is painted on silk, which gives the subtle color transitions an added luster.
The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods are made of bone, a detail that lends the hanging scroll from the Taishô period a particular, antiquarian charm. For collectors of traditional bird-and-flower painting, this hanging scroll, Sparrows on a Plum Tree Branch, is a charming addition.
