Description

This kakemono dates from the Shōwa period and takes up one of the best-known auspicious motifs in Japanese art: the legend of Takasago, in which an elderly couple is depicted beneath an evergreen pine, while in the background the red sun rises over the sea, announcing the beginning of a new day shared together.

The couple, she depicted with a rake, he with a broom, symbolizes marital fidelity and a long life spent together – a motif traditionally given as a congratulatory gift at weddings and other festive occasions and still highly popular in Japan today. The brushwork is fine and rich in detail, the coloring restrained and warm, creating a calm, dignified mood.

Painted on silk with roller ends made of bone, this handcrafted unique work shows the careful execution of an artist well versed in classical iconography. An evocative piece for anyone who appreciates the rich symbolic world of Japanese painting and is looking for a motif of deep meaning.
